Infuse BMP 2: What kind of results are your getting and where are you using it?
Wed, 12/23/2009 - 18:47 — Logan MD DMD
Many of my oral surgery counterparts are using infuse. I have used it with good results in both the sinus and gbr. Only problem I see is with swelling and inflammation.
What kind of results are you getting with infuse and where are you using it?

Comments
Infuse rhBMP-2 has good results but has post op issues
I have used infuse in both the sinus and in GBR it works well but be prepared for lots of swelling. I have only done a few cases so cannot speak with authority.
BMP-2 Lawsuits?
I have heard "thru the grapevine" that there are some lawsuits surrounding BMP-2 due to severe postop airway swelling/loss of airway patency. Anyone hear of this or know details??
BMP LAWSUITS
I HAVE HEARD SIMILAR!
Lawsuits
I have heard of new lawsuits being brought against many implant docs. Mostly General Dentists who were in over their head.
Seems that some take a weekend course and then try to do very advanced cases. For example, one of the General Dentists in my area recently started placing his own implants. He took a couple of short courses and jumped in head first. Next thing you know, he had stuck an implant into the mesial loop of mental nerve. The sad thing was that he did not even know what the mesial loop was. This resulted in a lawsuit which he, of course, lost. After shelling out some serious cash, he is now referring his implants once again.
BMP-2 lawsuits: I have not heard of that, Show me the links?
I have not heard of any lawsuites on the safety of BMP-2. I would think you would see info on the net on this? Do you have any links?
BMP Lawsuits links I found
The issue is that most docs are using it "off label". They are combining BMP2 with bone graft and not with the carrier that comes with the product. If you do have problems, this can be an issue. http://www.adrsupport.org/forums/showthread.php?t=9328&page=2
BMP problems has been seen with cervical surgery
From what I read there has been some problens with off label use. I read mostly in cervical surgery. Anyone else read anything?
BMP and trash talk
Let's not have any trash talking of GPs here. As a GP who has been doing implants for eighteen years and teaching them for sixteen, and and editorial advisor of this publication, I take offense to the earlier comment.
I've both taught and learned from specialists, and have often helped them out when they had problems in their practices (clandestinely, of course, no specialist would ever admit to getting advice from a generalist).
Lets all try to help each other out when we have problems, so we can have an open exchange of experience and opinion.
Spiro: I think you missed the point.
With the exception of that one comment most of the lawsuit talk was about BMP lawsuits and not GP lawsuits.
I agree with you wholeheartly that there are many GP's that have excellent training and can do implants very well. I being a specialist actually work with a few of those GP who do implants yet we still work togethor.
I been on these blogs for over a year and I think you will see that there is little to no trash talk and mostly people working togethor and sharing advice and experience. I hope you add to the info being passed and not get pissed off by one persons comments or opinions.
Sorry if I got a little
Sorry if I got a little cranky. I really feel we're all in this together.
PS: I also completely agree
PS: I also completely agree that one of our worst problems is practitioners performing procedures without adequate training.
Rh BMP2
Can someone please post some acutal information about RhBMP-2 instead of talking about these "phantom" lawsuits. I am interested in actual RhBMP-2 info.
Thank you.
BMP2 - A simple PUBMED search tells all
Marco,
If you want BMP2 info quickly, do a PUBMED search and you will get all of the background info you need very quickly. Plus, that info is going to be much more reliable than what you find on any messageboard.
If you want info on how people are actually using it, this is a good forum for such discussion. The thing with BMP2 is that almost everyone is using it off-label. BMPS is supposed to only be used with a collagen sponge, but almost everyone I know discards the sponge and mixes it with bone graft. This is "off-label" use. It does work well. Because of its high cost, I only use it with the most severe defects.
Here is a link for a quick explanation for BMP function and use:

Infuse BMP is showing some great results
I have done it in several sinus lifts where I had little to know native bone. The results the patients got where great, I was able to place 4 implants to replace the molars bilaterally with no problem. Misch as showed some nice cases at conferences I attended this year.
I agree problems come about when you use materials off label. There are paper out on rhBMP-2 all you need to do is do a pubmed search.
Infuse works wonders
I have done several cases with infuse for sinus lifts and gbr and works great. Lots of swelling.
U need ti mesh to make it work.
